N35 Grade Neodymium Magnet

This rectangular block magnet is manufactured from N35 grade Neodymium Iron Boron, a high-performance rare earth magnetic material.

Neodymium magnets provide high magnetic energy density compared with many conventional magnet materials, allowing strong magnetic performance from relatively compact components.

What Does N35 Mean?

N35 identifies the magnetic material's energy classification.

The grade designation relates to the maximum energy product of the NdFeB material and helps distinguish it from other neodymium grades.

N35 does not mean this magnet has a 35kg pull force.

The actual magnetic holding strength depends on the finished magnet's dimensions, magnetisation direction, magnetic circuit and operating conditions.

Rectangular 50.8mm x 12.7mm x 6.35mm Design

This magnet measures 50.8mm long x 12.7mm wide x 6.35mm thick, giving it an elongated rectangular shape.

Its dimensions are equivalent to approximately:

  • 2 inches long

  • 1/2 inch wide

  • 1/4 inch thick

This geometry may be useful where:

  • A long, narrow magnetic component is required

  • A rectangular contact area is preferred

  • The magnet must fit into an elongated recess

  • Magnetic positioning or retention is needed

  • A compact magnetic assembly is being developed

The stated dimensions describe the magnet's physical geometry and do not indicate its pull force or holding capacity.

Engineering and Industrial Applications

N35 neodymium block magnets can be incorporated into engineered products where permanent magnetic attraction is required.

Potential applications include:

  • Industrial machinery

  • Manufacturing equipment

  • Magnetic positioning systems

  • Fixtures and jigs

  • Mechanical assemblies

  • Equipment housings

  • Custom magnetic devices

  • Prototype mechanisms

For applications involving vibration, movement or dynamic loading, the complete assembly should be tested under realistic operating conditions.

Magnetic Holding and Retention

The elongated rectangular profile of this magnet may be suitable for magnetic holding and retention applications.

Potential uses include:

  • Removable components

  • Magnetic closures

  • Access panels

  • Equipment covers

  • Positioning fixtures

  • Product assemblies

Holding performance depends on the magnetisation direction, contact area, target material, air gaps and load direction.

Magnetic retention should not replace engineered mechanical restraint where failure could create a safety hazard.

Fixtures, Jigs and Positioning

Rectangular neodymium magnets can be used within suitable fixtures and positioning systems.

Potential functions include:

  • Holding components temporarily

  • Locating parts

  • Maintaining alignment

  • Retaining removable components

  • Assisting repetitive positioning

  • Creating magnetic reference points

The magnet should be securely retained within the fixture or assembly, with appropriate consideration given to the magnetic forces involved.

Magnetisation Direction

Block magnets can be manufactured with different magnetic orientations.

A 50.8mm x 12.7mm x 6.35mm rectangular block magnet could potentially be:

  • Magnetised through its 6.35mm thickness

  • Magnetised across its 12.7mm width

  • Magnetised along its 50.8mm length

The actual magnetisation direction and pole configuration have not been supplied and should not be assumed from the block shape.

Confirm the magnetic orientation before incorporating the magnet into a design requiring a specific field direction.

Magnetic Performance

The practical magnetic performance of this N35 block magnet depends on:

  • Magnetic material properties

  • Magnet dimensions

  • Magnetisation direction

  • Pole configuration

  • Magnetic circuit design

  • Target material

  • Target steel thickness

  • Contact area

  • Surface condition

  • Air gaps

  • Operating temperature

  • Load direction

No specific pull force or surface Gauss rating has been supplied.

These values should not be inferred from the N35 designation alone.

Direct Pull vs Shear Force

Magnetic holding performance varies according to load direction.

Direct pull occurs when the magnet is separated perpendicular to the attracting surface.

Shear loading occurs when the magnet is encouraged to slide parallel to the target surface.

Shear performance may be influenced by:

  • Surface friction

  • Surface coatings

  • Air gaps

  • Vibration

  • Installation orientation

  • Mechanical leverage

Where the magnet is used for holding or retention, performance should be tested under the actual operating conditions.

Air Gaps Reduce Magnetic Attraction

Magnetic attraction decreases as the distance between the magnet and target increases.

Potential sources of air gaps include:

  • Adhesive

  • Paint

  • Powder coating

  • Plastic housings

  • Protective films

  • Mechanical clearance

  • Surface irregularities

For applications requiring maximum magnetic interaction, unnecessary separation should be minimised.

Target Steel Thickness

The thickness and composition of the target material can influence magnetic holding performance.

A thin steel target may become magnetically saturated and may not provide the same attraction as an appropriately thick ferromagnetic target.

For magnetic holding applications, the target material and magnetic circuit should be considered during product selection and assembly design.

Bonding and Installation

Adhesive bonding may be suitable for incorporating this magnet into a product or assembly.

Before installation:

  1. Confirm magnetisation direction and polarity.

  2. Check the intended magnetic arrangement.

  3. Clean the bonding surfaces.

  4. Remove dust, oil and grease.

  5. Select an adhesive compatible with the magnet's actual coating.

  6. Confirm the adhesive is suitable for the intended operating conditions.

  7. Provide appropriate dimensional clearance.

  8. Avoid force-fitting or excessive clamping pressure.

  9. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

The exact coating or plating of this magnet has not been supplied, so adhesive compatibility should be confirmed before permanent installation.

For high-load or safety-critical applications, suitable engineered mechanical retention may also be required.

Avoid Force-Fitting

Neodymium Iron Boron is a hard but brittle magnetic material.

Do not force the magnet into an undersized hole, recess or housing.

Excessive mechanical pressure can cause:

  • Chipping

  • Cracking

  • Fracturing

  • Damage to protective coatings

Provide appropriate dimensional clearance and use a suitable retention method.

Do Not Machine Neodymium Magnets

Finished neodymium magnets should not normally be mechanically modified.

Avoid:

  • Drilling

  • Cutting

  • Grinding

  • Filing

  • Crushing

  • Machining

These processes can damage the brittle NdFeB material and any protective coating.

If a different size or shape is required, use a magnet manufactured to the required dimensions.

Compatible Magnetic Materials

Neodymium magnets attract suitable ferromagnetic materials, including:

  • Iron

  • Mild steel

  • Magnetic steel

  • Compatible ferromagnetic components

They do not effectively attract inherently non-magnetic materials such as:

  • Aluminium

  • Copper

  • Brass

  • Plastic

  • Timber

  • Glass

Many stainless steel grades may also be weakly magnetic or non-magnetic.

Test the intended target material where magnetic compatibility is important.

N35 Neodymium vs Ferrite Magnets

Neodymium magnets generally provide higher magnetic energy density than conventional ferrite magnets.

N35 neodymium may be preferred for:

  • Compact magnetic assemblies

  • High magnetic performance relative to size

  • Engineering components

  • Fixtures and jigs

  • Magnetic holding and retention

  • Custom magnetic systems

Ferrite magnets may be preferred for:

  • More economical applications

  • Larger magnetic components

  • Applications benefiting from natural corrosion resistance

  • Designs where lower magnetic energy density is acceptable

The appropriate magnetic material depends on magnetic performance, environmental conditions and design constraints.

Permanent Magnetic Operation

This N35 block magnet is a permanent magnet.

It requires:

  • No electricity

  • No batteries

  • No charging

  • No external power supply

Its magnetic field remains continuously active during normal use.

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
