Neodymium Block Magnet – 50mm x 6mm x 6mm | N38

Description

The Neodymium Block Magnet – 50mm x 6mm x 6mm | N38 is a powerful, slim-profile rare earth magnet designed for applications requiring strong magnetic attraction within a compact rectangular shape. Manufactured from N38 grade neodymium magnetic material, this permanent magnet offers excellent magnetic performance relative to its size, making it suitable for industrial applications, engineering projects, magnetic assemblies, workshop fixtures and custom product designs.

Measuring 50mm long x 6mm wide x 6mm thick, this rectangular neodymium magnet features an elongated, narrow profile with a square 6mm x 6mm cross-section. Its compact design makes it particularly useful for applications where installation space is limited but a longer magnetic component is required.

Neodymium magnets, also known as rare earth magnets or NdFeB magnets, are manufactured using an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron. They are widely used in industrial, commercial and technical applications because of their high magnetic strength compared with many conventional magnet materials.

The N38 magnetic grade identifies the magnet's material performance classification. It should not be confused with a pull-force rating, as actual holding strength depends on factors including the magnet's dimensions, magnetisation direction, target steel thickness, surface condition and installation method.

This 50mm rectangular rare earth magnet is a versatile choice for magnetic fastening, positioning, holding, alignment, prototyping and equipment assembly applications.

Whether you're designing a custom magnetic closure, developing a magnetic fixture or incorporating a permanent magnet into an industrial product, this narrow N38 neodymium block magnet provides a practical magnetic component for a wide variety of projects.

Also known as a 50mm neodymium bar magnet, rectangular rare earth magnet, N38 block magnet, slim neodymium magnet, NdFeB rectangular magnet or square-section magnetic bar, this product is suitable for applications where compact dimensions and strong magnetic attraction are important.

With a length of 50mm and a square cross-section measuring 6mm x 6mm, this magnet can be incorporated into designs where a wider magnetic block may not fit.

The narrow format may be particularly useful for:

  • Slim mounting channels

  • Recessed magnetic closures

  • Compact magnetic assemblies

  • Narrow attachment points

  • Custom fixtures

  • Magnetic alignment applications

  • Space-restricted product designs

Its rectangular geometry also allows the magnet to be positioned along an edge or within a corresponding recess.

Because neodymium magnets are brittle, avoid forcing the magnet into an undersized cavity or applying excessive pressure during installation.

N38 Grade Neodymium Magnetic Material

This magnet is manufactured from N38 grade neodymium iron boron (NdFeB).

Neodymium magnets are among the strongest commercially available permanent magnet materials and are widely used where high magnetic performance is required in a relatively small space.

The N38 grade indicates a defined magnetic material classification associated with the magnet's maximum energy product.

It does not indicate a pull force of 38kg.

Actual magnetic holding strength depends on several factors, including:

  • Magnet dimensions

  • Magnetisation direction

  • Contact surface area

  • Target steel thickness

  • Surface finish

  • Air gaps

  • Mounting configuration

  • Load direction

The magnet's exact pull-force rating and surface Gauss have not been supplied.

Magnetic Holding and Positioning Applications

The elongated shape of this neodymium block magnet makes it a useful component for magnetic positioning and retention systems.

Potential applications include:

  • Holding removable panels

  • Aligning components during assembly

  • Securing lightweight covers

  • Creating magnetic closures

  • Positioning steel components

  • Supporting custom magnetic fixtures

For reliable performance, consider the complete magnetic circuit and the materials involved.

Direct contact with a suitable ferromagnetic steel surface generally provides stronger attraction than installations involving substantial air gaps or non-magnetic barriers.

Magnetic Cabinet and Enclosure Closures

Neodymium block magnets are commonly incorporated into magnetic catches and closure systems.

This 50mm x 6mm x 6mm magnet may be suitable for custom-designed closures in:

  • Cabinets

  • Access panels

  • Equipment enclosures

  • Display units

  • Storage compartments

  • Custom furniture

The magnet can be incorporated into a recessed mounting arrangement where the surrounding construction allows.

For applications involving repeated opening and closing, ensure the magnet is adequately retained and protected against impact.

Do not allow brittle neodymium magnets to repeatedly collide with exposed steel components or other magnets.

Industrial and Engineering Applications

N38 neodymium block magnets are used in a wide variety of industrial and engineering applications where compact magnetic components are required.

Potential uses include:

  • Assembly fixtures

  • Positioning equipment

  • Magnetic alignment systems

  • Product prototypes

  • Custom holding devices

  • Magnetic mechanisms

  • Equipment development

  • Fabrication projects

The 50mm elongated profile may provide useful design flexibility where magnetic attraction is required along a narrow rectangular area.

For industrial installations, verify the magnet's suitability for the operating temperature, vibration, impact and environmental conditions.

Installation and Mounting Considerations

Neodymium block magnets can be incorporated into custom assemblies using suitable mechanical retention systems, housings or adhesives.

The most appropriate installation method depends on the application.

General Installation Recommendations

  1. Confirm the required magnetic holding performance.

  2. Check the dimensions of the installation space.

  3. Identify the magnet's polarity and magnetisation direction before assembly.

  4. Ensure the target surface is magnetically compatible.

  5. Select a suitable retention method.

  6. Avoid excessive mechanical pressure on the magnet.

  7. Protect the magnet from impact and repeated collisions.

  8. Test the completed assembly under realistic operating conditions.

Important: Do not drill, cut, grind or machine finished neodymium magnets. They are brittle and may fracture, while machining dust can present a fire hazard.

Magnetic Pull Force and Performance

The magnetic holding force of a neodymium block magnet is influenced by the installation conditions.

Important factors include:

  • Magnetic grade

  • Magnet dimensions

  • Magnetisation direction

  • Target steel thickness

  • Surface roughness

  • Surface coatings

  • Air gaps

  • Load orientation

  • Temperature

Pull-force ratings are commonly measured under controlled conditions using suitable thick steel surfaces.

Actual performance in practical applications may be lower.

For example, magnetic resistance to sliding along a vertical surface can be significantly different from direct pull-off force.

No specific pull-force rating has been provided for this magnet.

For applications requiring a defined holding capacity, testing in the intended assembly is recommended.

Suitable Magnetic Surfaces

This neodymium magnet attracts suitable ferromagnetic materials, including:

  • Mild steel

  • Iron

  • Certain magnetic steels

  • Compatible ferromagnetic components

It does not magnetically attach to materials such as:

  • Aluminium

  • Copper

  • Brass

  • Timber

  • Plastic

  • Glass

  • Non-magnetic stainless steel

Some stainless steel grades are magnetic, while others are not.

The magnet may also attract or repel other permanent magnets depending on their pole orientation.

Neodymium Magnet Handling and Durability

Although neodymium magnets provide excellent magnetic strength, they are hard and brittle by nature.

They can chip, crack or shatter if:

  • Dropped onto a hard surface

  • Allowed to snap together

  • Struck against steel

  • Subjected to bending forces

  • Compressed unevenly

  • Forced into tight mounting cavities

Always handle neodymium magnets carefully and keep fingers clear of potential pinch points.

For applications involving repeated contact, consider using an appropriate housing or protective mounting arrangement.

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Range and Tolerance

Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. We specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
