The 1mm thickness allows the magnet to be incorporated into low-profile designs where a larger or thicker magnet may not be practical.
Potential installation locations include:
- Narrow recesses
- Compact housings
- Electronic devices
- Sensor assemblies
- Precision mechanisms

The stated dimensions describe the physical geometry of the magnet and do not represent its pull force, holding capacity or safe working load.
N48H Grade Neodymium Magnet
This block magnet is manufactured from N48H grade Neodymium Iron Boron.
The N48 component identifies a high-energy neodymium material grade, while the H suffix identifies a material designed for improved resistance to irreversible demagnetisation at elevated operating temperatures compared with standard-temperature grades.
This combination makes N48H useful where an application requires:
- Strong magnetic performance
- Compact magnet dimensions
- Elevated-temperature capability
- High magnetic energy density
- Permanent magnetic operation
- Integration into precision equipment
The N48H designation describes the magnetic material and should not be interpreted as a pull-force rating.
What Does N48H Mean?
N48H is a neodymium magnetic material grade.
The designation contains two important pieces of information:
N48 refers to the material's magnetic energy classification. Higher numerical grades generally provide greater magnetic energy density when other factors are equivalent.
H identifies an elevated-temperature neodymium classification designed to provide improved resistance to irreversible magnetic loss under heat compared with standard grades.
This makes N48H particularly relevant for applications where both compact magnetic strength and increased temperature resistance are required.
N48H does not directly specify:
- Pull force
- Surface Gauss
- Safe working load
- Magnetisation direction
- Pole orientation
- Exact operating temperature of the finished magnet
These depend on the complete magnet design and operating conditions.
High-Temperature Neodymium Magnet
Standard neodymium magnets can experience reduced magnetic performance when exposed to elevated temperatures.
High-temperature grades such as N48H are formulated to provide greater resistance to irreversible demagnetisation under heat.
This can make the magnet suitable for appropriately engineered applications involving:
- Warm operating environments
- Heated equipment
- Electronic assemblies
- Industrial machinery
- Sensors near heat-generating components
- Temperature-variable equipment
However, high temperature does not mean unlimited temperature resistance.
The safe maximum operating temperature of a neodymium magnet depends on the specific material specification, magnet geometry, magnetic circuit and operating environment.
No verified maximum operating temperature has been supplied for this product, so a specific temperature limit should not be assumed.
High Magnetic Performance in a Compact Size
N48H combines a relatively high neodymium magnetic grade with elevated-temperature capability.
This can be particularly valuable in applications where designers need to maximise magnetic performance while working within strict dimensional limitations.
At only 9mm x 1.3mm x 1mm, this magnet may be useful in compact:
- Sensors
- Switches
- Instruments
- Electronics
- Mechanical mechanisms
- Product assemblies
- Positioning systems
The actual magnetic performance will depend on the magnetisation configuration and complete magnetic circuit.
Sensors and Instrumentation
The miniature dimensions of this N48H block magnet make it suitable for incorporation into compact magnetic sensing systems.
Potential applications include:
- Hall-effect sensors
- Reed switches
- Position sensors
- Proximity detection
- Magnetic switching
- Equipment monitoring
- Instrumentation
- Electronic control systems
Sensor performance depends on factors including:
- Magnetisation direction
- Pole orientation
- Magnet-to-sensor distance
- Sensor sensitivity
- Installation geometry
- Operating temperature
- Surrounding magnetic materials
The magnetisation direction has not been supplied and should be confirmed where field orientation is critical.
Electronics and Compact Product Assemblies
The thin 1mm profile can make this magnet useful for integration into electronic and consumer product designs where available space is limited.
Potential functions include:
- Magnetic sensing
- Position detection
- Alignment
- Closure detection
- Magnetic switching
- Component locating
- Product assembly
- Magnetic identification
Where magnets are incorporated into electronics, appropriate consideration should be given to nearby magnetically sensitive components.
Positioning and Alignment
This rectangular N48H magnet may also be incorporated into magnetic positioning and alignment systems.
Potential functions include:
- Component locating
- Repeatable positioning
- Magnetic alignment
- Assembly assistance
- Fixture positioning
- Precision mechanisms
- Prototype assemblies
Where multiple magnets are installed together, confirm polarity and orientation before permanent installation.
Magnetisation Direction
Rectangular neodymium magnets can be manufactured with different magnetisation directions.
This 9mm x 1.3mm x 1mm block magnet could potentially be magnetised:
- Through its 1mm thickness
- Through its 1.3mm width
- Along its 9mm length
- In another specialised configuration
The actual magnetisation direction and pole configuration have not been supplied and should not be assumed from the magnet's rectangular geometry.
Confirm this specification where pole location or magnetic field orientation is important.
Magnetic Performance
Although this magnet is confirmed as N48H grade, its practical magnetic performance depends on several additional factors.
These include:
- N48H material properties
- Magnetisation direction
- Pole configuration
- Magnetic circuit design
- Target steel composition
- Target steel thickness
- Available contact area
- Surface condition
- Air gaps
- Operating temperature
- Load direction
- Installation geometry
No specific pull force or magnetic flux density in Gauss has been supplied.
These values should not be estimated from the N48H grade or physical dimensions alone.
N48H Does Not Mean 48kg Pull Force
The N48H designation does not mean this magnet has a 48kg pull force.
N48H identifies the magnetic material grade and temperature classification.
Pull force is a separate performance measurement affected by:
- Magnet dimensions
- Magnetisation direction
- Target material
- Target steel thickness
- Contact area
- Air gaps
- Surface condition
- Test configuration
A verified pull-force specification should be used where holding capacity is important.
Temperature and Magnetic Performance
Temperature is an important consideration when designing with neodymium magnets.
As temperature increases, magnetic output generally decreases temporarily. If a magnet is exposed to temperatures beyond the limits of its magnetic material and magnetic circuit, some magnetic loss can become irreversible.
The H-grade material provides increased resistance to this type of high-temperature demagnetisation compared with standard neodymium grades.
Practical temperature capability depends on factors including:
- Magnet grade
- Magnet dimensions
- Magnetisation direction
- Magnetic circuit
- Exposure duration
- Ambient conditions
- Nearby heat sources
- Application geometry
For temperature-critical applications, use a verified maximum operating temperature rather than relying on the H designation alone.
Air Gaps and Magnetic Attraction
Even very small air gaps can reduce the practical magnetic attraction of a miniature neodymium magnet.
Potential sources of separation include:
- Adhesive
- Paint
- Powder coating
- Plastic
- Protective films
- Product housings
- Dirt
- Mechanical clearance
For maximum practical attraction, unnecessary separation between the magnet and target should generally be minimised.
Target Steel Thickness
Where this magnet is used against ferromagnetic steel, the target material forms part of the magnetic circuit.
Performance can be influenced by:
- Steel composition
- Steel thickness
- Target dimensions
- Available contact area
- Surface condition
- Magnetic saturation
Very thin steel may not provide the same magnetic response as a suitably thick ferromagnetic target.
Testing against the actual target material is recommended for performance-critical applications.
Bonding This Thin Neodymium Magnet
Because this magnet is only 1mm thick, careful handling is particularly important during installation.
It can potentially be bonded into an appropriately designed recess or product assembly.
Before bonding:
- Confirm magnetisation direction
- Confirm polarity where multiple magnets are involved
- Clean both bonding surfaces
- Remove grease, dust and contamination
- Select an adhesive compatible with the magnet's actual surface finish
- Provide appropriate dimensional clearance
- Avoid bending or force-fitting the magnet
- Allow the adhesive to cure according to its instructions
The specific coating or plating has not been supplied, so adhesive compatibility with the actual magnet surface should be confirmed.
Avoid Bending and Mechanical Stress
Neodymium Iron Boron is hard but brittle and should not be treated like flexible metal.
This is particularly important for a magnet only 1mm thick.
Avoid:
- Bending
- Twisting
- Force-fitting
- Impact
- Crushing
- Excessive clamping pressure
Mechanical stress may cause the magnet to crack, chip or fracture.
Do Not Machine Neodymium Magnets
Finished neodymium magnets should not be modified using conventional workshop methods.
Avoid:
- Drilling
- Cutting
- Grinding
- Crushing
- Machining
These processes can damage the brittle NdFeB material and any protective surface coating.
If another dimension or geometry is required, select a magnet manufactured to the required size.
Compatible Target Materials
Neodymium magnets attract suitable ferromagnetic materials, including:
- Mild steel
- Iron
- Magnetic steel
- Compatible ferromagnetic components
They will not effectively attract inherently non-magnetic materials such as:
- Aluminium
- Copper
- Brass
- Plastic
- Timber
- Glass
Many stainless steel grades may also be weakly magnetic or non-magnetic and should be tested before relying on magnetic attraction.
N48H Neodymium vs Standard Neodymium Grades
The primary advantage of N48H is the combination of high magnetic energy and enhanced elevated-temperature capability.
Compared with many standard-temperature neodymium grades, N48H is designed to provide:
- Strong magnetic performance
- High magnetic energy density
- Better resistance to irreversible demagnetisation at elevated temperatures
- Suitability for compact high-performance assemblies
This makes N48H particularly useful where both magnetic strength and temperature resistance are important design considerations.
Permanent Magnetic Operation
This N48H neodymium block is a permanent magnet.
It requires:
- No electricity
- No batteries
- No charging
- No external power supply
Its magnetic field remains continuously active during normal use.

Safety and Handling
Neodymium magnets can attract other magnets and ferromagnetic objects suddenly and should be handled carefully.
This magnet is particularly small and thin, so care should be taken to prevent it from snapping against another magnet or steel surface.
Potential hazards include:
- Pinching
- Magnet collisions
- Chipping
- Cracking
- Fragmentation
Serious Ingestion Hazard
Small neodymium magnets present a serious ingestion hazard.
If multiple magnets are swallowed, or a magnet is swallowed together with another magnetic or metallic object, they can attract through internal tissue and cause severe injury.
Keep this magnet securely away from babies and children.
Where the magnet is incorporated into another product, ensure it is securely retained so it cannot become loose or accessible.
Seek urgent medical attention if magnet ingestion is suspected.
Permanent magnets should also be kept an appropriate distance from pacemakers, implanted medical devices, magnetic storage media, magnetic cards and magnetically sensitive equipment.
Please Note
This product is an N48H Neodymium Block Magnet measuring 9mm long x 1.3mm wide x 1mm thick, manufactured from Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) rare earth magnetic material.
The N48H designation identifies the magnetic material grade and elevated-temperature classification. It does not mean the magnet has a 48kg pull force.
The H designation indicates enhanced resistance to irreversible demagnetisation at elevated temperatures compared with standard neodymium grades, but it should not be interpreted as a specific maximum operating temperature for this finished magnet.
No verified maximum operating temperature, pull force, Gauss rating, coating or plating, magnetisation direction, pole configuration or dimensional tolerance has been supplied and these specifications should not be assumed.
Actual magnetic performance depends on the N48H material properties, magnetisation configuration, operating temperature, magnetic circuit, target material, target steel thickness, available contact area, surface condition, air gaps, load direction and installation geometry.
Because this magnet is only 1mm thick, avoid bending, twisting, impact, force-fitting or excessive mechanical pressure.
The stated 9mm x 1.3mm x 1mm dimensions describe the physical geometry of the magnet and do not represent its pull force, holding capacity or safe working load.

Surface Treatment
The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.
Range and Tolerance
Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. We specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.
Magnetic Properties
Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.
