Neodymium Cylinder Magnet – 17mm x 52mm | N48 | Teflon Coated

The Neodymium Cylinder Magnet – 17mm x 52mm | N48 | Teflon Coated is a powerful rare earth permanent magnet designed for demanding industrial, engineering and specialised applications requiring high magnetic strength combined with a protective, low-friction coating. Manufactured from high-performance N48 grade neodymium iron boron (NdFeB), this long cylindrical magnet delivers exceptional magnetic energy in a relatively compact form.

Measuring 17mm in diameter and 52mm in length, this neodymium cylinder magnet features an elongated profile suitable for incorporation into tubular housings, drilled cavities, machinery, magnetic assemblies and precision-engineered components. Its substantial length and N48 magnetic grade make it a strong choice for applications requiring a concentrated magnetic field from the circular end faces.

A key feature of this magnet is its Teflon (PTFE) coating, which provides a non-metallic protective barrier around the neodymium magnet. Teflon is valued for its low-friction surface, chemical resistance and protective properties, making this magnet suitable for specialised applications where a conventional exposed nickel-plated surface may be less desirable.

Why Choose an N48 Neodymium Cylinder Magnet?

N48 neodymium magnets provide very high magnetic energy, allowing strong magnetic performance to be achieved without requiring excessively large magnetic components. This makes N48 material particularly useful in engineering applications where both magnetic strength and available installation space are important considerations.

The 17mm x 52mm cylindrical profile provides a long, narrow magnetic component suitable for insertion into purpose-built housings, tubular assemblies and precision-machined cavities.

Its elongated geometry also makes it useful in applications where the magnet needs to extend deeper into a mechanical assembly while maintaining a relatively compact diameter.

Benefits of a Teflon Coated Neodymium Magnet

The Teflon coating, also known as PTFE, provides a protective outer layer with several useful characteristics for specialised magnetic applications.

Compared with a conventional metallic surface, PTFE offers a low coefficient of friction, helping the magnet move more smoothly against compatible surfaces. It also provides good resistance to many chemicals and helps isolate the underlying neodymium material from direct environmental exposure.

This makes Teflon-coated magnets useful for specialised industrial, laboratory, mechanical and engineering applications where surface protection and reduced friction are important.

The coating should still be protected from cuts, scratches and excessive abrasion. Damage that exposes the underlying magnetic material can reduce the corrosion protection provided by the coating.

Industrial and Engineering Applications

The combination of N48 magnetic strength, 17mm diameter, 52mm length and Teflon coating makes this magnet a specialised component for engineers, manufacturers, researchers and product designers.

It can be incorporated into custom machinery, magnetic retrieval or positioning systems, sensor assemblies, automation equipment and purpose-built magnetic devices. For permanent installation, the magnet can be incorporated into an appropriately sized housing or bonded using an adhesive specifically compatible with PTFE and the surrounding substrate.

Because PTFE has a naturally low-surface-energy finish, conventional adhesives may not bond effectively without appropriate surface preparation or a specialised adhesive system.

Please Note

Neodymium magnets are extremely powerful and should always be handled carefully. A 17mm x 52mm N48 neodymium cylinder magnet can attract steel objects and other magnets with considerable force, creating serious pinch hazards and potentially causing the brittle magnetic material to fracture if magnets are allowed to collide.

The Teflon coating should be protected from abrasion, cutting and impact. Damage to the coating may expose the underlying magnet and reduce its protection against corrosion.

Actual magnetic performance depends on factors including the mating material, steel thickness, surface condition, contact area, air gap, operating temperature and direction of force. Coatings and other gaps between the magnet and steel will reduce effective magnetic attraction.

Neodymium magnets are hard but brittle. Do not drill, cut, machine or weld the magnet.

Keep strong magnets away from children, pacemakers, medical implants, magnetic storage media and sensitive electronic equipment that may be affected by strong magnetic fields.

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Range and Tolerance

Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. We specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
