Neodymium Cylinder Magnet – 20mm x 20mm | N40

The Neodymium Cylinder Magnet – 20mm x 20mm | N40 is a powerful rare earth permanent magnet designed for industrial, commercial, engineering and manufacturing applications requiring substantial magnetic strength in a compact cylindrical format. Manufactured from N40 grade neodymium iron boron (NdFeB), this magnet provides an excellent combination of magnetic performance, reliability and versatility.

Measuring 20mm in diameter and 20mm in length, this neodymium cylinder magnet has an equal diameter-to-length profile that provides a substantial magnetic body while remaining compact enough for integration into machinery, fixtures, housings and custom assemblies. It is well suited to magnetic holding, positioning, automation, sensing, robotics, product development and OEM manufacturing applications.

The magnet is axially magnetised through its 20mm length, positioning the north and south poles on the two circular end faces. This pole orientation concentrates the magnetic field at the ends of the cylinder, making it particularly effective for end-to-end attraction, magnetic holding, sensing, positioning and coupling applications.

Protected by a durable nickel-copper-nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni) coating, the magnet has a polished silver finish that helps protect the underlying neodymium material from corrosion and everyday wear.

Why Choose an N40 Neodymium Cylinder Magnet?

N40 neodymium magnets provide high magnetic energy and considerably greater strength for their size than conventional ferrite magnets. This makes them an excellent option for applications where powerful magnetic performance is required without using an excessively large magnetic component.

The 20mm x 20mm cylindrical profile offers a useful combination of contact area and magnetic material. Its equal diameter and length make it easy to incorporate into drilled cavities, cylindrical housings, mechanical components and purpose-built magnetic assemblies.

Because this magnet is magnetised through its length, its north and south poles are positioned on the flat circular ends. This configuration is particularly useful for applications involving end-face attraction, magnetic switching, sensing, coupling and positioning.

Industrial and Engineering Uses

The 20mm x 20mm N40 neodymium cylinder magnet is a versatile magnetic component for engineers, manufacturers, product designers, maintenance teams and automation specialists. Its combination of compact dimensions and strong magnetic performance makes it suitable for prototypes as well as ongoing production requirements.

For permanent installations, the magnet can be incorporated into a suitably sized housing or bonded into a recess using an adhesive compatible with the magnet's coating and the surrounding material. Avoid press-fitting or applying excessive mechanical force, as neodymium magnets are brittle and can crack under stress.

Please Note

Neodymium magnets are extremely powerful and should always be handled carefully. A 20mm x 20mm neodymium magnet can attract nearby steel objects and other magnets with significant force, creating pinch hazards and potentially causing the magnet to chip or break if allowed to collide.

Actual holding performance depends on the application and factors such as steel thickness, steel grade, contact area, surface condition, air gaps and direction of force. Paint, coatings, uneven surfaces and sideways or peeling loads can substantially reduce effective holding strength.

Neodymium magnets are hard but brittle. Do not drill, cut, machine or weld the magnet.

Keep strong magnets away from children, pacemakers, medical implants, magnetic storage media and sensitive electronic equipment.

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Range and Tolerance

Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. We specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
