Their compact geometry can be useful where:
- Installation space is extremely limited
- A discreet magnetic component is required
- Magnets need to fit inside miniature housings
- Multiple magnets are incorporated into a small assembly
- Product miniaturisation is important
- A small permanent magnetic source is required
The stated 2mm x 2mm dimensions describe the physical geometry of each magnet and do not represent pull force or holding capacity.
N50 Grade Neodymium
These miniature magnets are manufactured from N50 grade Neodymium Iron Boron, a high-performance rare earth permanent magnetic material.
N50 provides high magnetic energy density, making it useful for applications where significant magnetic performance is required from very small magnet dimensions.
Potential advantages include:
- High magnetic performance relative to volume
- Extremely compact dimensions
- Suitability for miniature components
- Permanent magnetic operation
- Integration into space-constrained products
What Does N50 Mean?
N50 identifies the magnetic grade of the Neodymium Iron Boron material.
The numerical designation relates to the material's maximum energy product and helps classify the magnetic performance potential of different NdFeB grades.
The N50 designation does not mean each magnet has a 50kg pull force.
N50 also does not directly specify:
- Pull force
- Surface Gauss
- Holding capacity
- Safe working load
- Magnetisation direction
- Pole configuration
- Maximum operating temperature
These properties depend on the finished magnet and complete magnetic circuit.
High Magnetic Performance in an Extremely Small Format
One of the main advantages of neodymium magnetic material is its ability to provide high magnetic energy from compact dimensions.
At only 2mm x 2mm, these N50 cylinders can be incorporated into products where larger magnetic components would be impractical.
Potential functions include:
- Magnetic attraction
- Positioning
- Alignment
- Sensing
- Switching
- Component retention
- Miniature closures
- Product integration
Actual magnetic performance depends on the complete application rather than magnet grade alone.
Electronics and Sensor Applications
Miniature cylinder magnets can be useful in compact sensing and electronic systems.
Potential applications include:
- Hall-effect sensors
- Reed switches
- Position sensors
- Proximity detection
- Magnetic switching
- Movement detection
- Miniature instrumentation
Sensor response depends on:
- Magnetisation direction
- Pole orientation
- Magnet-to-sensor distance
- Sensor sensitivity
- Installation geometry
- Surrounding magnetic materials
The magnetisation direction of these magnets has not been supplied and should be confirmed where magnetic field orientation is critical.
Miniature Product Assemblies
The extremely small 2mm x 2mm dimensions make these magnets suitable for integration into miniature components and products.
Potential uses include:
- Small mechanisms
- Miniature closures
- Models
- Precision assemblies
- Electronic devices
- Removable components
- Prototype products
- Custom manufactured items
Because these magnets are extremely small, they should be securely retained within the finished assembly.
This is particularly important where a product could be accessible to children.
Magnetisation Direction
Cylinder magnets can be manufactured with different magnetic orientations.
A 2mm diameter x 2mm long cylinder magnet could potentially be:
- Axially magnetised through its 2mm length
- Diametrically magnetised across its 2mm diameter
- Manufactured with another specialised magnetic configuration
The actual magnetisation direction and pole configuration have not been supplied and should not be assumed from the cylinder shape.
Confirm this specification where pole orientation or magnetic field direction is important.
Magnetic Performance
Although these magnets are confirmed as N50 grade, practical magnetic performance depends on factors including:
- N50 material properties
- Magnet dimensions
- Magnetisation direction
- Pole configuration
- Magnetic circuit
- Target material
- Target steel thickness
- Contact area
- Surface condition
- Air gaps
- Load direction
- Installation geometry
No specific pull force or magnetic flux density in Gauss has been supplied.
These values should not be inferred from the N50 grade alone.
Air Gaps Are Critical with Micro Magnets
Physical separation can significantly reduce magnetic attraction.
This is especially important for a magnet measuring only 2mm x 2mm, because even a very small gap can represent a substantial proportion of the magnet's overall dimensions.
Potential sources of separation include:
- Adhesive
- Paint
- Plastic housings
- Protective films
- Product casings
- Fabric
- Paper
- Mechanical clearance
Where maximum magnetic interaction is required, unnecessary air gaps should be minimised.
Bonding 2mm Neodymium Magnets
Adhesive bonding is one possible method of installing miniature magnets into a product.
Before bonding:
- Confirm the required polarity
- Confirm magnetic orientation
- Clean the bonding surfaces
- Remove grease, dust and contamination
- Select an adhesive suitable for the actual magnet finish
- Provide appropriate dimensional clearance
- Avoid force-fitting
- Allow the adhesive to cure fully
The exact coating or plating has not been supplied, so adhesive compatibility with the actual magnet surface should be confirmed.
Polarity in 100-Piece Production Packs
When installing these magnets in quantity, check polarity before permanent assembly.
Incorrect orientation can cause magnets that are intended to attract to repel instead.
A consistent polarity-checking process can be particularly useful for:
- Batch manufacturing
- Sensor assemblies
- Magnetic closures
- Paired components
- Repetitive assembly
- OEM production
Avoid Force-Fitting
Neodymium Iron Boron is hard but brittle.
Do not force these tiny magnets into undersized recesses or housings.
Force-fitting may cause:
- Chipping
- Cracking
- Fracturing
- Damage to the protective surface finish
Provide appropriate clearance and use a suitable retention method.
Do Not Machine Neodymium Magnets
These miniature magnets should not be mechanically modified.
Avoid:
- Drilling
- Cutting
- Grinding
- Filing
- Crushing
- Machining
Their extremely small dimensions and brittle NdFeB construction make conventional machining impractical and likely to damage the magnets.
Compatible Target Materials
Neodymium magnets attract suitable ferromagnetic materials, including:
- Mild steel
- Iron
- Magnetic steel
- Compatible ferromagnetic components
They do not effectively attract inherently non-magnetic materials such as:
- Aluminium
- Copper
- Brass
- Plastic
- Timber
- Glass
Many stainless steel grades may also be weakly magnetic or non-magnetic.
Test the actual target where magnetic compatibility is important.
N50 Neodymium vs Ferrite Magnets
N50 neodymium provides significantly higher magnetic energy density than conventional ferrite magnetic material.
N50 neodymium is particularly useful for:
- Miniature components
- Space-constrained assemblies
- Electronics
- Sensors
- Precision mechanisms
- High magnetic performance relative to size
Ferrite magnets may be preferred for:
- More economical applications
- Larger magnetic components
- Applications benefiting from good natural corrosion resistance
- Situations where lower magnetic performance relative to size is acceptable
For extremely small magnets such as these 2mm x 2mm cylinders, neodymium provides significant advantages where miniaturisation is important.
Permanent Magnetic Operation
These N50 cylinder magnets are permanent magnets.
They require:
- No electricity
- No batteries
- No charging
- No external power supply
Their magnetic fields remain continuously active during normal use.

Safety and Handling
These 2mm x 2mm neodymium magnets present a serious ingestion hazard due to their extremely small size.
Keep all magnets securely away from babies and children.
If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other through body tissue and cause severe internal injuries. Suspected magnet ingestion requires urgent medical attention.
If these magnets are incorporated into another product, they should be securely retained so they cannot become detached during normal or foreseeable use.
Permanent magnets should also be kept an appropriate distance from:
- Pacemakers and implanted medical devices
- Magnetic cards
- Magnetic storage media
- Magnetically sensitive instruments
- Sensitive electronic equipment
Neodymium magnets are brittle and can chip or fracture if allowed to collide with each other or ferromagnetic objects.
Please Note
This product contains 100 individual N50 Neodymium Cylinder Magnets, each measuring 2mm in diameter x 2mm long.
The N50 designation identifies the Neodymium Iron Boron magnetic material grade and does not mean each magnet has a 50kg pull force.
No specific pull force, Gauss rating, coating or plating, magnetisation direction, pole configuration, dimensional tolerance or maximum operating temperature has been supplied and these specifications should not be assumed.
Actual magnetic performance depends on the N50 material properties, magnetisation configuration, magnetic circuit, target material, target steel thickness, contact area, surface condition, air gaps, load direction and installation geometry.
Because each magnet measures only 2mm x 2mm, these magnets are a serious swallowing hazard and must be kept securely away from babies and children. Where incorporated into another product, suitable measures should be taken to prevent the magnets from becoming detached.
Neodymium is a hard and brittle magnetic material. Avoid impact, force-fitting, drilling, cutting, grinding or machining.
The stated 2mm diameter x 2mm length describes the physical dimensions of each magnet and does not represent pull force, holding capacity or safe working load.
These magnets are not certified lifting equipment and should not be used for overhead or safety-critical lifting.

Surface Treatment
The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.
Range and Tolerance
Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. We specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.
Magnetic Properties
Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.
