Neodymium Cylinder Magnet – 6mm x 12mm | N52 | Gold Coating | Diametrically Magnetised

Description

The Neodymium Cylinder Magnet – 6mm x 12mm | N52 | Gold Coating | Diametrically Magnetised is a high-performance rare earth rod magnet designed for specialised applications requiring a compact cylindrical shape and a magnetic field oriented across the magnet's diameter.

Manufactured from N52 grade Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB), this powerful permanent magnet measures 6mm in diameter and 12mm in length. Its slender cylindrical profile, combined with high magnetic energy density, makes it suitable for precision engineering, magnetic sensing systems, rotational mechanisms, scientific equipment and custom magnetic assemblies.

Unlike conventional axially magnetised cylinder magnets, which have their North and South poles located on the opposite flat circular ends, this magnet is diametrically magnetised. This means the magnetic field is oriented across the 6mm diameter, with the North and South poles located on opposite sides of the curved cylindrical surface.

This specialised magnetic orientation is particularly useful for applications requiring a magnetic field that changes direction as the cylinder rotates, such as certain magnetic sensors, rotary encoders, position detection systems and custom magnetic mechanisms.

The magnet also features a gold coating, providing an attractive metallic finish and a protective surface layer over the underlying neodymium material. The gold-coloured appearance may also be beneficial in applications where the magnet is visible within a finished assembly.

With its N52 magnetic grade, 6mm x 12mm cylindrical dimensions and diametric magnetisation, this magnet offers a specialised alternative to standard axially magnetised neodymium rod magnets.

Neodymium magnets, also known as rare earth magnets, NdFeB magnets, super strong magnets or permanent rare earth magnets, are among the strongest commercially available permanent magnets. Their high magnetic energy density allows powerful magnetic performance from relatively small dimensions.

The N52 designation refers to the magnetic material grade and does not represent a pull force of 52kg. Actual magnetic performance depends on the magnet's dimensions, magnetisation direction, surrounding materials and magnetic circuit design.

Also known as a 6mm x 12mm diametrically magnetised neodymium cylinder, N52 gold-coated rod magnet, diametric rare earth magnet, radial-pole cylinder magnet, magnetic sensor magnet or precision NdFeB cylinder magnet, this product is designed for specialised engineering and technical applications.

Diametrically Magnetised Cylinder Design

The defining feature of this magnet is its diametric magnetisation.

Unlike standard axially magnetised cylinder magnets, this magnet has its magnetic poles positioned across the diameter rather than at the flat circular ends.

How Diametric Magnetisation Works

For this 6mm x 12mm cylinder:

  • The magnetisation direction runs across the 6mm diameter.

  • The North pole is located on one side of the curved cylindrical surface.

  • The South pole is located on the opposite side of the curved cylindrical surface.

  • The flat circular ends are not the primary pole faces.

This magnetic configuration creates a different field distribution from an axially magnetised cylinder.

Diametric vs Axial Magnetisation

Feature Diametrically Magnetised Cylinder Axially Magnetised Cylinder
Magnetisation Direction Across the diameter Along the cylinder length
North Pole Curved cylindrical side One flat circular end
South Pole Opposite curved side Opposite flat circular end
Typical Applications Rotary sensing, position detection, specialised mechanisms General magnetic holding, end-to-end attraction
Magnetic Field Orientation Perpendicular to cylinder axis Parallel to cylinder axis

Important: Diametrically magnetised and axially magnetised cylinder magnets are not interchangeable in applications requiring a specific magnetic field orientation.

N52 Grade Neodymium Magnetic Material

This magnet is manufactured from N52 grade Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB).

N52 is a high-performance neodymium grade recognised for its high maximum energy product.

Compared with lower grades such as N35, N38 and N42, N52 material generally offers greater magnetic energy potential when comparing magnets of identical dimensions and magnetisation.

Benefits of N52 Magnetic Material

High Magnetic Energy Density

N52 neodymium material provides strong magnetic performance relative to size.

Compact Design

Allows substantial magnetic performance from a small cylindrical component.

Precision Applications

Suitable for specialised magnetic assemblies requiring a compact permanent magnet.

Permanent Magnetic Field

Provides magnetic attraction without requiring electrical power.

Versatile Engineering Applications

Useful for custom magnetic sensors, positioning mechanisms and technical equipment.

The N52 grade does not indicate a 52kg pull-force rating.

Gold-Coated Finish

This neodymium cylinder magnet features a gold coating, providing an attractive metallic appearance and protective surface finish.

Neodymium Iron Boron material can be susceptible to corrosion when exposed to moisture and unsuitable environmental conditions.

Protective coatings help reduce direct exposure of the underlying magnetic material.

Benefits of Gold Coating

  • Attractive metallic appearance

  • Protective surface layer

  • Suitable for applications where the magnet remains visible

  • Useful for precision assemblies

  • Decorative finish for specialised projects

Please Note: The exact coating structure, thickness and corrosion-resistance rating have not been supplied. Gold-coated neodymium magnets may incorporate additional underlying plating layers.

The gold coating should not be assumed to provide waterproof performance or suitability for prolonged skin contact without confirmed specifications.

Compact 6mm x 12mm Cylinder Profile

This magnet measures:

  • Diameter: 6mm

  • Length: 12mm

Its length is twice its diameter, creating a slender cylindrical profile.

This geometry may be useful for:

  • Rotating magnetic shafts

  • Sensor assemblies

  • Custom cylindrical housings

  • Magnetic positioning mechanisms

  • Precision engineering prototypes

  • Scientific instruments

For applications involving rotation, the magnet should be securely retained within a suitable housing or mounting arrangement.

Magnetic Sensor Applications

Diametrically magnetised cylinder magnets are commonly used in magnetic sensing applications where the orientation of the magnetic field is important.

Potential applications include:

  • Rotary position sensing

  • Angular position detection

  • Magnetic encoders

  • Hall-effect sensor systems

  • Magnetic field measurement

  • Custom position detection mechanisms

When the magnet rotates around its cylindrical axis, the direction of its magnetic field changes relative to a stationary sensor.

This can be useful for detecting angular movement or rotational position.

However, suitability depends on the sensor type, magnet-to-sensor distance, magnetic field strength and mechanical alignment.

Rotational and Precision Engineering Applications

The diametric magnetisation makes this magnet particularly useful for specialised rotating assemblies.

Potential applications include:

  • Rotary magnetic mechanisms

  • Magnetic position detection

  • Custom sensor systems

  • Engineering prototypes

  • Scientific instruments

  • Precision magnetic assemblies

For rotating applications, the magnet should be mechanically secured and the completed assembly tested under the intended operating conditions.

Magnetic Holding Performance

The magnetic holding strength of this N52 cylinder magnet depends on several factors, including:

  • N52 magnetic grade

  • Magnet dimensions

  • Diametric magnetisation

  • Contact surface area

  • Target steel thickness

  • Surface condition

  • Air gaps

  • Load orientation

  • Operating temperature

  • Magnetic circuit configuration

Because this magnet is diametrically magnetised, its holding characteristics differ from those of an axially magnetised cylinder with the same dimensions.

A specific pull-force rating and surface Gauss have not been supplied.

For applications requiring a defined magnetic field or holding force, obtain verified performance data or conduct appropriate testing.

Installation and Mounting Considerations

Correct installation is essential for applications requiring a specific magnetic field orientation.

General Installation Recommendations

  1. Confirm the required magnetisation direction.

  2. Verify the magnet's dimensions.

  3. Identify the North and South pole orientation if necessary.

  4. Select a suitable mounting or retention method.

  5. Protect the gold coating from damage.

  6. Avoid excessive mechanical pressure.

  7. Prevent uncontrolled collisions with steel or other magnets.

  8. Secure the magnet appropriately in rotating assemblies.

  9. Test the completed system under realistic operating conditions.

Important: Do not drill, cut, grind or machine finished neodymium magnets. They are brittle and machining dust can present a fire hazard.

Suitable Magnetic Materials

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
