38.1mm Diameter x 19.05mm Thick Disc Magnet
This N52 neodymium disc magnet measures:
- 38.1mm diameter (1.5 inches)
- 19.05mm thickness (0.75 inches)
The magnet's thickness is exactly half its nominal diameter, creating a substantial cylindrical disc profile rather than the thin, flat geometry of many conventional disc magnets.
Its combination of significant magnetic volume and N52 grade NdFeB material makes this magnet suitable for applications requiring high magnetic performance within a relatively compact footprint.
The dimensions describe the magnet's physical geometry and do not represent its pull force or safe working load.
N52 Grade Neodymium Magnet
This magnet is manufactured from N52 grade Neodymium Iron Boron.
The N52 designation identifies the magnetic material grade and is associated with a high maximum energy product compared with lower standard neodymium grades.
N52 material can be particularly useful where:
- High magnetic performance is required
- Available installation space is limited
- A strong magnetic field is required from a compact component
- Magnetic system efficiency is important
- A high-performance rare earth magnet is preferred
The N52 designation does not mean the magnet has a pull force of 52kg.
Magnetic grade and pull force are different specifications.
What Does N52 Mean?
The "N" in N52 identifies the magnet as a standard-temperature neodymium grade family, while the numerical grade relates to the material's maximum energy product.
A higher numerical neodymium grade generally indicates greater potential magnetic performance when comparing magnets of equivalent dimensions, geometry and magnetic configuration.
For example, an N52 magnet can generally provide higher magnetic performance than the same magnet geometry manufactured from a lower standard grade such as N35.
However, actual magnetic performance still depends on:
- Magnet dimensions
- Magnetisation direction
- Magnetic circuit
- Target material
- Air gap
- Operating conditions
N52 should therefore be treated as a material grade, not a direct measure of pull force, Gauss or holding capacity.
High-Performance Rare Earth Magnetic Material
Neodymium Iron Boron is a high-performance rare earth permanent magnetic material widely used in industrial and engineered magnetic systems.
NdFeB magnets provide strong magnetic properties relative to their physical size and are commonly used where conventional ferrite magnets would need to be substantially larger to achieve comparable magnetic performance.
Potential functions include:
- Magnetic attraction
- Holding
- Positioning
- Alignment
- Separation
- Sensing
- Product integration
- Magnetic circuit development
Engineering and Manufacturing Applications
The substantial dimensions and N52 grade make this disc magnet suitable for appropriately designed engineering and manufacturing applications.
Potential uses include:
- Equipment components
- Assembly systems
- Positioning mechanisms
- Fixtures
- Jigs
- Magnetic testing
- Prototype machinery
- Custom magnetic assemblies
- Product development
The complete magnetic system should be designed around the magnet's actual field orientation and measured performance requirements.
Fixtures, Jigs and Positioning
Powerful neodymium magnets can be incorporated into fixtures and jigs for temporary positioning and alignment.
Potential functions include:
- Component locating
- Assembly assistance
- Repeatable positioning
- Inspection fixtures
- Prototype tooling
- Removable fixture components
Because an N52 magnet of this size may generate substantial magnetic attraction, the fixture should be designed so the magnet can be handled and released safely.
Magnetic holding should not replace appropriate mechanical clamping where movement could create a safety hazard.
Magnetic Separation Applications
Neodymium magnets are also commonly incorporated into magnetic separation equipment designed to attract ferromagnetic contamination or components.
Potential systems may include:
- Separation equipment
- Collection systems
- Inspection equipment
- Prototype separators
- Custom magnetic assemblies
Suitability depends on factors including the magnetic field configuration, working distance, material flow, target particle size and overall magnetic circuit.
A bare disc magnet should not automatically be considered a complete magnetic separator without appropriate system design.
Magnetisation Direction
Disc magnets can be manufactured with different magnetisation configurations.
A 38.1mm diameter x 19.05mm thick disc magnet could potentially be:
- Axially magnetised through its thickness
- Diametrically magnetised across its diameter
- Manufactured with another specialised pole configuration
The actual magnetisation direction has not been supplied and should not be assumed from the disc shape alone.
Confirm the magnetic orientation where pole location or field direction is important.
Magnetic Performance
Although this magnet is confirmed as N52 grade, its actual magnetic performance depends on more than material grade.
Important factors include:
- N52 material properties
- Magnetisation direction
- Pole configuration
- Magnetic circuit design
- Target steel composition
- Target steel thickness
- Available contact area
- Surface condition
- Air gaps
- Load direction
- Mechanical leverage
No specific pull force or surface magnetic flux density in Gauss has been supplied for this product.
These values should not be estimated from the N52 designation or dimensions alone.
N52 Grade Does Not Mean 52kg Pull Force
It is important to distinguish between magnetic grade and pull force.
The N52 designation does not mean this magnet has a 52kg pull force.
Pull force is a separate performance measurement influenced by:
- Magnet geometry
- Magnetisation direction
- Target steel
- Contact area
- Air gap
- Test configuration
A verified pull-force specification should be used where magnetic holding performance is critical.
Pull Force vs Safe Working Load
Even where a pull-force figure is available, it should not automatically be interpreted as the amount of weight a magnet can safely support.
Published pull-force values are generally measured under specific test conditions.
Real-world performance can be reduced by:
- Thin target steel
- Paint
- Powder coating
- Rust
- Dirt
- Uneven contact
- Air gaps
- Side loading
- Mechanical leverage
- Vibration
A pull-force specification is therefore not the same as a certified safe working load.
Direct Pull vs Shear Force
Magnetic holding performance changes significantly according to load direction.
Direct pull occurs when the magnet is separated perpendicular to the target steel surface.
Shear loading occurs when the magnet is encouraged to slide parallel to the target.
Shear performance depends heavily on:
- Surface friction
- Contact quality
- Surface coatings
- Installation orientation
- Mechanical leverage
- Vibration
Test the complete assembly under realistic conditions where magnetic holding is important.
Air Gaps and Magnetic Attraction
Air gaps can substantially reduce the practical performance of a neodymium magnet.
Separation may be introduced by:
- Paint
- Powder coating
- Adhesive
- Plastic
- Protective films
- Dirt
- Rust
- Product housings
- Mechanical clearance
For maximum practical magnetic attraction, unnecessary separation between the magnet and target should generally be minimised.
Target Steel Thickness
The properties of the target steel influence magnetic attraction.
Important factors include:
- Steel composition
- Steel thickness
- Target dimensions
- Contact area
- Surface condition
- Magnetic saturation
Very thin steel may not provide the same magnetic response as a suitably thick ferromagnetic target.
Testing against the actual target material is recommended for performance-critical applications.
Bonding an N52 Neodymium Disc Magnet
This disc magnet can be incorporated into a suitable housing or assembly using an appropriate adhesive where required.
Before bonding:
- Confirm the required magnetisation direction
- Confirm polarity where multiple magnets are used
- Clean the bonding surfaces
- Remove grease, dust and contamination
- Select an adhesive compatible with the magnet's actual surface finish
- Provide suitable dimensional clearance
- Avoid force-fitting
- Allow the adhesive to cure according to its instructions
The specific coating or plating has not been supplied, so adhesive compatibility with the actual magnet surface should be confirmed.
Avoid Uncontrolled Magnet Collisions
An N52 neodymium magnet of this size should be handled with particular care.
When two powerful magnets approach each other, or when the magnet approaches a substantial steel object, magnetic attraction can accelerate the magnet rapidly.
Uncontrolled collisions may cause:
- Serious finger pinching
- Trapping injuries
- Chipping
- Cracking
- Fragmentation
- Damage to nearby equipment
Keep the magnet under control at all times and separate powerful magnets using appropriate handling methods.
Neodymium Is Hard but Brittle
Despite its high magnetic performance, Neodymium Iron Boron is a hard and brittle material.
It should not be subjected to:
- Heavy impact
- Hammering
- Bending
- Prying
- Excessive clamping pressure
- Force-fitting
The magnet should be supported appropriately when incorporated into mechanical assemblies.
Do Not Machine Neodymium Magnets
Finished neodymium magnets should not be modified using conventional workshop processes.
Avoid:
- Drilling
- Cutting
- Grinding
- Crushing
- Machining
These processes can damage the brittle magnetic material and any protective surface finish.
If another size or geometry is required, select a magnet manufactured to the appropriate dimensions.
Compatible Target Materials
Neodymium magnets attract suitable ferromagnetic materials, including:
- Mild steel
- Iron
- Magnetic steel
- Compatible ferromagnetic components
They will not effectively attract inherently non-magnetic materials such as:
- Aluminium
- Copper
- Brass
- Plastic
- Timber
- Glass
Many stainless steel grades may also be weakly magnetic or non-magnetic and should be tested before relying on magnetic attraction.
N52 Neodymium vs Ferrite Magnets
N52 neodymium and ferrite magnets provide substantially different magnetic characteristics.
N52 neodymium magnets generally provide:
- Very high magnetic performance relative to size
- Strong magnetic properties from compact dimensions
- Advantages in space-restricted systems
- Suitability for high-performance engineered assemblies
Ferrite magnets generally provide:
- Lower cost
- Good natural corrosion resistance
- Good resistance to demagnetisation
- Suitability where larger magnet dimensions are acceptable
N52 neodymium is commonly selected where high magnetic performance from a relatively compact permanent magnet is an important design requirement.
Permanent Magnetic Operation
This N52 neodymium disc is a permanent magnet.
It requires:
- No electricity
- No batteries
- No charging
- No external power supply
Its magnetic field remains continuously active during normal use.

Safety and Handling
N52 neodymium magnets of this size can generate powerful attraction and require careful handling.
Keep fingers and other body parts clear when the magnet approaches another magnet or a substantial ferromagnetic object. Sudden attraction may cause significant pinching or trapping injuries.
Powerful magnets can also collide with enough force to chip, crack or fragment because NdFeB magnetic material is brittle.
Use appropriate handling procedures and eye protection where there is a risk of magnet collision or fragmentation.
Keep powerful permanent magnets an appropriate distance from:
- Pacemakers
- Implanted medical devices
- Magnetic storage media
- Magnetic cards
- Sensitive electronic equipment
Keep magnets securely away from children.

Surface Treatment
The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.
Range and Tolerance
Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. We specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.
Magnetic Properties
Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.
