This Rare Earth Neodymium disc magnet may be of the smallest disc magnets in our product range, but don’t be fooled by its size - this magnet is a tough little character. Because it is made from Neodymium magnetic material, it is surprisingly strong and extremely versatile. Its uses are limited only by your imagination.

Ideal for craft projects, these small disc magnets also perfect for organising your office space, displaying art work and for all sorts of applications in the home. They are also used in a wide range of unexpected applications, from electronic equipment to speakers and electric motors.

Compared to the strength of other types of permanent magnets, these small rare earth magnets can flex a whole lot of muscle. In fact, the powerful N50 Grade strength discs are often referred to as ‘Micromagnets’. The attractive coating is non-toxic and anti-corrosive which protects the magnet from oxidisation, extends its life span and improves the reliability of products that use it. Gold-coated magnets can still rust when exposed to moisture or environmental damage. To protect your gold magnet from corrosion, consider applying a sealant to extend the life of the coating. However, keep in mind that this may slightly reduce the magnet’s overall pull strength.

The combination of gold coatings and magnetism means these disc magnets aren’t just strong, they’re beautiful too. Because they don’t have that ‘industrial’ appearance, they’re perfect for artistic and decorative projects such as jewellery making, fashion design and in the development of sophisticated retail products. The inert nature of gold coated magnets has also led to their use in magnetic therapies, because they can be applied to human skin without irritation.

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Range and Tolerance

Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. AMF Magnetics specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
