Neodymium Disc Magnet – 5mm x 3mm | N42

Compact, powerful, and incredibly versatile, this Neodymium Disc Magnet measures 5mm in diameter x 3mm thick and is manufactured from premium N42-grade NdFeB (Neodymium Iron Boron) rare earth magnetic material. Designed to deliver exceptional magnetic strength in a miniature format, this permanent magnet is ideal for electronics, engineering, manufacturing, product design, model making, crafts, and precision DIY applications.

Neodymium magnets are the strongest commercially available permanent magnets, offering significantly greater holding power than ferrite, Alnico, or samarium cobalt magnets of comparable size. The N42 grade provides higher magnetic performance than standard lower-grade neodymium magnets, making this compact disc magnet an excellent choice for applications where maximum holding force is required in a small space.

This magnet is axially magnetised, meaning the magnetic poles are located on the two flat 5mm diameter faces. This configuration provides maximum face-to-face holding performance when used against a ferrous steel surface or paired with another magnet.

Finished with a durable nickel-copper-nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni) coating, the magnet offers excellent resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and everyday wear while maintaining a smooth, polished finish.

Why Choose an N42 Neodymium Disc Magnet?

The 5mm x 3mm N42 Neodymium Disc Magnet provides exceptional magnetic performance in a compact form factor. The higher N42 magnetic grade delivers increased holding strength, while the 3mm thickness offers greater magnetic energy than thinner miniature magnets. It is an excellent choice for compact products, electronic devices, precision assemblies, and applications where space is limited but reliable magnetic performance is essential.

Please Note

Although small in size, this is a very powerful rare earth magnet and should be handled carefully. Small neodymium magnets present a serious swallowing hazard and must be kept away from children. If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract through internal tissue and cause severe injury requiring immediate medical attention.

Holding performance is achieved under ideal conditions using a clean, flat steel surface with direct contact. Actual magnetic strength will vary depending on the application, air gap, surface finish, and material being attracted. Keep away from pacemakers, implanted medical devices, sensitive electronic equipment, and magnetic storage media. Avoid excessive heat, drilling, machining, or heavy impacts, as these may permanently reduce the magnet's performance or cause it to chip or crack.

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Range and Tolerance

Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. We specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
