Neodymium Disc Magnet – 60mm x 30mm | N48

Description

The Neodymium Disc Magnet – 60mm x 30mm | N48 is an exceptionally powerful rare earth magnet designed for demanding industrial, engineering and specialised magnetic applications. Manufactured from high-performance N48 grade Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB), this large cylindrical magnet delivers outstanding magnetic strength relative to its size, making it suitable for applications requiring substantial magnetic attraction and a compact, concentrated magnetic field.

Measuring 60mm in diameter x 30mm thick, this heavy-duty neodymium disc magnet features a substantial cylindrical body and a large circular contact surface. Its combination of diameter, thickness and N48 magnetic grade makes it a powerful magnetic component for industrial assemblies, custom magnetic fixtures, engineering projects, magnetic separation systems and specialised equipment development.

Neodymium magnets, also known as rare earth magnets, NdFeB magnets or super strong magnets, are among the strongest commercially available permanent magnets. They are widely used in manufacturing, industrial automation, engineering, scientific research and magnetic equipment because of their high magnetic energy density.

The N48 magnetic grade identifies the magnetic material's performance classification. Compared with lower grades such as N35 or N38, N48 neodymium material generally provides greater magnetic energy potential for magnets of equivalent dimensions and magnetisation.

However, the N48 grade does not indicate a pull force of 48kg. Actual magnetic holding strength depends on the magnet's dimensions, magnetisation direction, contact area, target steel thickness, surface condition and installation arrangement.

With its large 60mm diameter and substantial 30mm thickness, this magnet can produce extremely strong magnetic attraction and must be handled with exceptional care. Powerful neodymium magnets can attract steel objects or other magnets suddenly, creating serious pinch, crush and impact hazards.

This N48 rare earth disc magnet is best suited to experienced industrial, engineering and technical users who require a high-performance permanent magnet for appropriately designed magnetic assemblies.

Also known as a 60mm neodymium disc magnet, 60mm x 30mm rare earth magnet, N48 cylinder magnet, large round neodymium magnet, heavy-duty NdFeB magnet or industrial disc magnet, this product is designed for applications where substantial magnetic strength and a large cylindrical magnetic component are required.

Compared with lower grades such as N35 and N38, N48 material generally provides higher magnetic energy potential when comparing magnets of identical dimensions and magnetisation.

Benefits of N48 Neodymium Magnets

High Magnetic Strength

N48 neodymium magnets provide substantial magnetic performance relative to their size.

High Magnetic Energy Density

The N48 grade is suitable for applications where strong magnetic fields are required from a compact permanent magnet.

Permanent Magnetic Performance

Neodymium magnets maintain their magnetic field without requiring electrical power.

Industrial Versatility

N48 magnets are used in a variety of engineering, industrial and technical applications.

Compact Magnetic Power

High-performance neodymium materials allow substantial magnetic attraction to be generated within relatively compact dimensions.

The N48 grade does not indicate a 48kg pull-force rating.

Extremely Strong Magnetic Attraction

Due to its large dimensions and N48 neodymium material, this magnet can generate extremely strong magnetic attraction.

Large neodymium magnets may attract nearby ferromagnetic objects from a distance, depending on the size, shape and material of those objects.

Potential hazards include:

  • Sudden attraction to steel surfaces

  • Crushing or trapping fingers

  • Collision with other magnets

  • Damage to nearby equipment

  • Chipping or shattering on impact

  • Uncontrolled movement during installation

This magnet should only be handled by experienced users using appropriate protective equipment, separation methods and controlled handling procedures.

Never place hands or fingers between this magnet and a steel surface or another powerful magnet.

Magnetic Field and Magnetisation Direction

The magnetic field generated by a neodymium disc magnet depends on its material grade, dimensions and magnetisation direction.

Disc magnets are commonly manufactured with axial magnetisation, where the north and south poles are located on opposite flat circular faces.

However, the magnetisation direction of this specific product has not been confirmed.

For precision applications, verify the pole orientation before installation.

Magnetisation direction affects:

  • Pole locations

  • Magnetic field distribution

  • Holding performance

  • Attraction to steel surfaces

  • Interaction with other magnets

  • Suitability for particular assemblies

Installation and Mounting Considerations

Large neodymium magnets require careful installation planning.

Potential mounting methods include:

  • Custom mechanical housings

  • Protective enclosures

  • Engineered retention systems

  • Suitable industrial adhesives

  • Specialised magnetic assemblies

The appropriate method depends on the intended application and operating conditions.

General Installation Recommendations

  1. Confirm the required magnetic performance.

  2. Verify the magnet's dimensions and magnetisation direction.

  3. Assess the installation environment for nearby steel objects.

  4. Use appropriate handling equipment and protective measures.

  5. Keep fingers clear of magnetic contact areas.

  6. Avoid uncontrolled attraction to steel surfaces.

  7. Protect the magnet against impact and mechanical stress.

  8. Secure the magnet using a suitable engineered retention method.

  9. Test the completed assembly under realistic operating conditions.

Important: Do not drill, cut, grind or machine finished neodymium magnets. They are brittle and machining dust can present a fire hazard.

Magnetic Pull Force and Performance

The holding strength of this magnet depends on several factors.

These include:

  • Magnetic grade

  • Magnet dimensions

  • Magnetisation direction

  • Target steel thickness

  • Surface condition

  • Air gaps

  • Load orientation

  • Temperature

  • Magnetic circuit configuration

A magnet's rated direct pull force is not equivalent to the weight it can safely support in every installation.

Sliding resistance, vibration, shock loading and air gaps can significantly reduce effective holding performance.

A specific pull-force rating has not been supplied for this magnet.

For load-bearing or industrial retention applications, obtain verified performance data and conduct appropriate engineering testing.

Suitable Magnetic Surfaces

This neodymium magnet attracts suitable ferromagnetic materials, including:

  • Mild steel

  • Iron

  • Certain magnetic steel alloys

  • Compatible ferromagnetic components

It does not magnetically attach to:

  • Aluminium

  • Copper

  • Brass

  • Timber

  • Plastic

  • Glass

  • Non-magnetic stainless steel

Some stainless steel grades are magnetic, while others are not.

The magnet may also attract or repel other permanent magnets depending on their pole orientation.

Neodymium Magnet Handling and Durability

Although neodymium magnets provide exceptional magnetic strength, they are hard and brittle by nature.

They may chip, crack or shatter if:

  • Dropped

  • Struck against steel

  • Allowed to collide with other magnets

  • Subjected to bending forces

  • Compressed unevenly

  • Forced into tight mounting spaces

For a magnet of this size, uncontrolled collisions can be particularly hazardous.

Protective housings and suitable handling procedures are strongly recommended for industrial applications.

Surface Treatment

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Magnetic Properties

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.

The Pull Force listed for each magnet is based on lifting 10mm thick steel from a horizontal surface. Magnets on a vertical surface (of 10mm thick steel) are generally able to hold around only 30% of the pull force listed in the product description. This is due to the effects of gravity and the lack of friction between the surface and the shiny magnet. Read More
